Coming Together in the Workplace: Supporting employees through hardships

Be the difference for others.

Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed how a strong and supportive workplace community can make a profound difference in the lives of its employees. We often spend more time with our colleagues than with our own families, and the bonds we form can be instrumental in navigating the ups and downs of life. When employees face personal hardships—whether it be illness, loss, or other life challenges—the way a workplace responds can either alleviate some of the burdens or exacerbate them.

In times of adversity, the strength of a team isn’t just about professional collaboration; it’s about human connection. Being surrounded by compassionate colleagues who genuinely care can have a tremendous impact on an individual’s ability to cope and thrive, even in the face of difficulties. I’ve seen firsthand how a supportive environment can uplift someone, offering them the resilience needed to push through tough times.

However, it wasn’t until recently that I fully realized the importance of intentional support systems within the workplace. While it’s wonderful when employees naturally come together to help a colleague in need, this isn’t something that should be left to chance. Creating structured support programs can ensure that no one falls through the cracks and that everyone feels valued and cared for, no matter what they’re going through.

When a company takes deliberate steps to care for its employees during hardships, it sends a powerful message: "We see you, and we’re here for you." This can lead to stronger employee loyalty, increased morale, and a more cohesive team overall. True support goes beyond simply offering a listening ear; it involves creating a workplace culture where empathy, understanding, and assistance are embedded in the fabric of the organization.

Building a supportive culture

The unfortunate truth is that many companies lack formal structures to support employees through personal hardships. They may offer standard benefits like paid time off or health insurance, but these are often not enough when someone is facing a serious challenge. Imagine if, instead, your employer provided dedicated resources and initiatives designed to help employees during these tough times.

Fortunately, some companies are leading the way in creating these supportive environments. Here are a few examples:

Google: Known for its robust employee support programs, Google offers everything from mental health resources to peer support groups.

Johnson & Johnson: The company provides a comprehensive employee assistance program (EAP) that includes counseling services and support for dealing with personal crises.

Patagonia: Patagonia’s workplace culture emphasizes work-life balance and offers extensive support for employees dealing with personal issues, including flexible schedules and paid family leave.

Salesforce: Through its Ohana culture, Salesforce fosters a sense of community and support, offering wellness programs and mental health resources to all employees.

By investing in such initiatives, companies can create a workplace where employees feel truly supported and valued, even during the most challenging times.

Practical steps to support employees

Companies of all sizes can implement strategies to support employees through hardships. Here are some practical ways to start:

Develop Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): These programs can offer counseling, legal support, and other resources to help employees navigate personal challenges.

Offer Flexible Work Arrangements: Allowing employees to work remotely or adjust their schedules can provide the flexibility needed to manage personal hardships without the added stress of rigid work hours.

Create Peer Support Networks: Encourage the formation of support groups within the company where employees can share experiences and offer mutual support.

Provide Training for Managers: Equip managers with the skills to recognize when an employee may be struggling and how to offer appropriate support.

Promote Mental Health Resources: Make mental health a priority by offering access to therapy, stress management workshops, and wellness programs.

Encourage Open Communication: Foster a culture where employees feel safe discussing their challenges without fear of judgment or repercussions.

Why this matters

Supporting employees through hardships isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a strategic business decision. Companies that show genuine care for their employees are more likely to retain top talent, boost employee engagement, and cultivate a positive workplace culture. In today’s competitive job market, where employees have more choices than ever, creating a supportive environment can set a company apart and make it a place where people want to work.

When employees feel supported, they’re more likely to stay committed to the company, even through tough times. They’re also more likely to go above and beyond in their roles, knowing that their well-being is valued. This leads to a more resilient, loyal, and productive workforce, which ultimately benefits the entire organization.

Start small, but start now

Creating a supportive culture doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. It can start with small steps, like sending a company-wide survey to gauge interest in support programs or offering training for managers on how to assist employees going through tough times. The key is to take action and show employees that their well-being is a priority.

I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received from colleagues throughout my career. These individuals have been there for me during both the highs and lows, and I credit them with much of my professional success. It’s time for all companies to create an environment where everyone can experience that same level of support.

By coming together in the workplace and supporting each other through hardships, we can build stronger, more compassionate organizations where every employee feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential.
