Let’s play a game. Think back as far as you can to when you were young. I want you to identify your first role model. No, you can’t choose your parents and family members for this game. I want you to think of someone who raised your levels of aspiration who you did not know personally.

Funny enough, mine was Bruce Wayne. I aspired to have the house, the cars, the suits, and of course fight crime at night. I haven’t achieved this quite yet.

In reality, my first role models were athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney. They pushed me to be better at my sport and helped me recognize the limitless potential that some athletes have. Of course, my professional soccer career didn’t pan out either!

As I got older, I started to read about Cameron Hanes, Tony Robbins, and Mark Cuban. All of a sudden, my ambitions became very different. My whole life changed as I began to follow individuals who were hyper-performers and highly impactful.

Although I have several role models and influential leaders in my personal and work life, I still benefit greatly from those individuals OUTSIDE my social circle. Influencers in my life who I will likely never meet. Having a higher level of aspiration BEYOND the workplace can be highly beneficial FOR the workplace.

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, organizations must continuously strive to elevate their aspirations to stay competitive and innovative. While internal role models play a crucial role in inspiring employees, it’s equally important for both employees and leadership to look beyond their own walls and draw inspiration from influential business figures outside the organization.
